Ways of Giving

Tom and Mary Kay Jorissen
The Monastery’s annual calendar reminds Tom and Mary Kay Jorissen to send the Sisters a check on a certain day every month. Their donation is one way of thanking the Sisters for their daily prayers for this family; and it’s a memoriam to Tom’s deceased aunt, Sr. David, a former member of this community.
Mary Kay contracted multiple sclerosis 44 years ago, but managed to live a full, independent life until 1996. At that time, Tom retired from his job at 3M to become her full-time caregiver. “I’m 71,” he says, “and it’s tough work. I need strength to care for her everyday. We want to keep her at home. The disease is getting worse, but she is a great lady. Her spirits remain strong.”
He believes deeply in the power of prayer and knows the Sisters’ prayers are sustaining him and giving him strength for this work of love. “I try to take two walks every day,” he explains; “that’s my time alone to think and to pray.”
