Meaning In Life Retreats

$100 each, includes lodging and meals

To grow spiritually requires being purposeful about where we find meaning in all that we do and in all we aspire to be.  These retreats, lead by wise teachers of the Christian life, invite participants to reflect on how they will live this “one, beautiful and singular life” (Mary Oliver).

A Retreat For Those In Transition with Steve Arnold

Fri., 7p thru Sat., 1p. Register online.

Change and transition are inevitable. The only place where we have a choice is in our response. Participants will learn how to manage the change and transition of life and explore times when we actually are called to seek change. Contemplative prayer will be an important component of this experience as participants discern the direction of God for their lives.

Steve Arnold responded to a few questions for those interested in the retreat...

How have you experienced and 'coped' with transition in your own life?

My own personal life has involved a great deal of transition. While growing up we moved a great deal, and I went to fourteen different schools before graduating from high school. I also experienced the transition of death when my first wife died at the age of 32 and I became a single parent. I have transitioned through various positions of ministry over the years and have lived in various places around the country. My experience internationally has helped me learn how to transition into various cultures. Currently I am transitioning into the third age of life by preparing to serve as a chaplain once I retire from teaching. My goal is to work in hospice units where I can help facilitate that final transition with people in their journey home.

What do you bring to the table that would be helpful to me?

As a teacher, spiritual director, chaplain and pilgrimage leader, I have a great deal of experience of working with people in transition. Each of us walks the journey in a different way. I would hope that I bring skills of listening that will help you clarify how God is calling you through transition.

What will you ask me to do?

Time will be spent in some brief teachings about transition and how they impact the human system, exploring some scripture where transition takes place, and in guided journaling and contemplative prayer. You are free to remain as private as you wish or you are free to invite others into your journey to gain their insight.

There are numerous types of transition but I see them coming at us in two forms. First are the transitions that happen regardless of what we do. Second are the transitions we invite into our lives because we know we must seek change. Both are difficult but learning to embrace the transition and walk with it gives us great ability to not only cope but to excel.

What will be my take-away?

Only God knows for sure, but hopefully you will take away clarity of thought regarding transitions in your life. It will not be my role to tell you what to do. I will invite you to take part in certain processes that will facilitate listening to God and exploring your transition.

Finding the Sacred in the Ordinary with Cathy Scherer Stubbs

Fri., 7p thru Sat., 1p. Register online.

Joan Chittister says, "Attention to the spiritual life will not change a dull, mundane life into something other than it is, but what it will do is change our appreciation for the presence of God in our dull, mundane life." Life unfolds before us, one ordinary day at a time, but for those with eyes to see and ears to hear, each moment reveals the presence of the Divine among us. Through reflection, journaling, music and discussion we will explore ways to recognize the sacred in the ordinary happenings of our lives.
